Podcasting Goes Mainstream - eMarketer

Podcasting Goes Mainstream - eMarketer: "Podcasting was born of the collision between social media and the iPod. Or, as Wired described it in a March 2005 article, ‘the bastard offspring of the blog and the Apple MP3 player.’ Back then podcasting was the domain of a few tech aficionados who saw it as a cheap and easy outlet to broadcast their views. All they needed was a microphone, some off-the-shelf software, and an installed base of iPod owners and Web surfers. But things have changed."

More people listen to Podcasts on PCs than iPods

iTWire - More people listen to Podcasts on PCs than iPods: "A new survey from Radio Joint Audience Research (RAJAR) reveals that 79 percent of people listen to Podcasts on desktop or laptop computers, compared to just 66 percent who use an iPod or other MP3 player. It seems that the average Podcast user subscribes to 3.6 Podcasts, spends an hour every week listening to them, and prefers comedy and music to all other genres. Interestingly, 53 percent of those asked would not mind advertising in their Podcasts as long as they didn't have to pay for the privilege."

Realizing Podcasting’s Potential - The Market Beyond the Pod

Realizing Podcasting’s Potential - The Market Beyond the Pod: "Podcasting 1.0 has been the age of iTunes and iPods. The original software clients that were built in late 2004 and early 2005 were designed to automatically download media files and put them into your iTunes music folder. By labeling the files as podcasts, they automatically went into a folder on iTunes for podcasts and from there the files were automatically synchronized with your iPod"

Podcasting for Profit

Podcasting for Profit

A podcast is a collection of digital media distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players (such as iPods) and personal computers. Believe it or not, you can make a successful internet business out of podcasting. In order to do so, your podcast has to be innovative and informative in order to rise above the competition. You may also be able to get sponsorship for your podcast.

One of the newest forms of internet business is podcasting. Podcasting for profit involves making and distributing podcasts in order to generate revenue. Podcast profits can be made through actually selling the podcast, but they are more likely to be generated through donations, sponsorship and networking.

Social Media

Social media are “Web 2.0” tools and services such as blogs, wikis, online forums, online user review sites, podcasts, RSS feeds and social networking web sites, such as MySpace, Facebook, MyBlogLog, de.licio.us, Digg and even the virtual world of Second Life, that people use to share opinions, insights, experiences and perspectives with each other. Increasingly, social media tools are used by marketers to place and spread their marketing messages, and to generate beaucoup traffic. The better you understand the inner workings of these services and communities, the better you can take advantage of them.
